The Universität Hamburg invites applications for a
Research Associate (wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in)
for the following project: “Ultrafast Structure Determination in Liquids” (areas C1,C2)) within the federal excellence cluster “Center for Ultrafast Imaging” (CUI) and will be conducted in collaboration with other CUI-members.

The position calls for 19.5 hours per week and is remunerated at the 13 TV-L salary level. A time limited contract will be offered with a maximum duration of 3 years. The short-term nature of this contract is based upon § 2 of the Academic Short-term Contract Act (Wissenschaftszeitvetragsgesetz).

Duties include academic services for the above project. Research associates also have an opportunity to pursue further academic qualifications, in particular a doctor- al dissertation obtained within the framework of the project may be used for the dissertation.

Area(s) of responsibility:
Within this research project the applicant investigates the nucleation and growth of nanoparticles and the ultrafast structural dynamics of proteins. This involves the development of microfluidic reaction systems for kinetic studies and performing time- resolved X-ray scattering experiments at free electron lasers (XFEL) and synchrotron radiation beamlines. The use of modern lithography-based microfluidics for na- noparticle synthesis or protein kinetics control in combination with X-ray scattering and finite element CFD-simulations allows to perform experiments under predictable and highly reproducible conditions. These are key elements for studying the very early stages during nanoparticle syntheses or structural evolution of proteins during activity.

A university degree in nanoscience, (physical) chemistry, (chemical) engineering, physics or a related field. Experience in nanoparticle synthesis, microfluidics, and/or X-ray scattering would be highly beneficial.
