Thomas Triggs Memorial Scholarship – Monash University Accident Research Centre

Duration: 3.5-year fixed-term appointment

Remuneration: A Monash University Accident Research Centre Foundation Scholarship of $40,000* p.a. 2023 full-time rate (tax-free stipend) – annually indexed plus allowances as per the stipend conditions

*Please note, the scholarship includes a $33,000 stipend and a $7,000 top-up.

The Opportunity

A unique, exciting opportunity exists for an exceptionally talented candidate interested in undertaking a PhD at the Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC). MUARC is Australia’s largest and most respected accident and injury prevention research organisation. MUARC’s research, consultancy, training and scientific expertise include safety in all modes of transport, in the workplace, in the community and in the home. MUARC’s goal is simple but profound: to prevent injury, save lives, and build futures.

The Thomas Triggs Memorial Scholarship: The Thomas Triggs Memorial Scholarship honours a man who made a remarkable contribution to the field of injury prevention and to Monash University throughout his career, which spanned almost four decades.

Professor Triggs was instrumental in establishing MUARC. Professor Triggs’ development of MUARC’s young driver, driver training and driving simulator research programs have led to the introduction of safety initiatives that have dramatically reduced Australia’s road toll.

Professor Triggs died on September 7th 2012 and in recognition of his contribution to the field of road safety, and as a personal tribute, the Trustees of the MUARC Foundation established the Thomas Triggs Memorial Scholarship.

The inaugural recipient, Ms Sarah-Louise Donovan, studied the influences for improved safety outcomes in high-risk organisations.

With the scholarship now vacant, potential PhD candidates have the opportunity to apply for this scholarship at MUARC and undertake their studies in one of the following broad injury prevention areas:

Disaster resilience, preparedness and management
Falls prevention
Injury epidemiology
Injury outcomes
Injury prevention in lower and middle-income countries
Road/Transport safety
Workplace safety
As part of the application process, potential PhD candidates are invited to submit a research proposal (approximately 1 page).

Potential PhD candidates can submit a research proposal based on their own injury prevention topic or can expand one of the PhD research proposals listed on the MUARC website. Details for writing a research proposal can be found here.

Candidate Requirements

As the successful candidate, you will:

Have an Honours or Masters degree with H1 or equivalent
Meet the eligibility criteria for PhD candidature at Monash University
Have an interest in injury prevention research
Have excellent written and verbal communication skills
Have the ability to work independently, as well as part of a team
Have the ability to plan, organise, manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
Have analytical thinking, data analysis and critical problem-solving skills
To be successful for this PhD opportunity, you must:

Be Australian or New Zealand citizen or hold Australian permanent residency, and
Enrol in the PhD between July – December 2023
