The use of RFID technology for monitoring of cavity-breeding birds

PhD position (J. L. Fischer scholarship) in bird ecology

Laboratory of Ornithology in Olomouc seeks one PhD student to join a team working on the project: „The use of RFID technology for monitoring of cavity-breeding birds“. Study species include the collared flycatcher, the great tit and the blue tit. Studied topics include timing of fledging, intensity of parental care, choice of a territory and a mate and prospecting of juveniles after the breeding season. This position will combine a field work together with data analyses and writing of scientific papers.

Requirements

MSc in Biology, with a specialization in Animal Ecology or Zoology
Proficient knowledge of English (ability to write scientific papers, B2 or higher)
Experience with data analyses
Residence in Europe or North America
Experience with the work on the birds in the field will be an advantage

Conditions of enrolment

The enrolment in PhD program is for four years (interview June, enrolment from September 2017). J. L. Fischer Scholarship is 25000 CZK (ca 950 euro) per month. This can cover tuition fee (4000 euro per year) and living costs in the Czech Republic. The position requires residence in Olomouc and must result in PhD thesis within the 4-year contract period. The successful candidate will first be offered a temporary position for one year with the option of renewal for another three years. Extension of the contract depends on sufficient progress in the first year to indicate that a successful completion of the PhD thesis within the next three years is to be expected.
