Position Description

The Institute of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology and the Core facility ”bioanalysis and mass spectrometry” at the University of Lübeck, Germany are looking for an ambitious, self-motivated

PhD student
(TV-L E13 65% for 3 years)

who is interested in addressing biomedical translational problems, mass spectrometry and lipid metabolism in stroke.

We have identified several sphingolipid players in neurological, metabolic and cardiovascular diseases (Diabetes 2015, 64 (3), 1035-45; Diabetologia 2012, 55 (2), 421-31; Atherosclerosis 2015 240 (1), 216-21). The successful candidate will build on these findings to primarily develop lipidomics LC/MS methods and apply them to novel biological and clinical questions in the field of lipid metabolism and transport at the blood-brain barrier in stroke. To achieve this goal, s/he will work with a myriad of methods including essentially liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry but also cell culture (primary cells and cell lines), molecular and cell biology techniques, and in vivo experiments using mice models. Experience with some of these methods (and strong desire to learn the others) is essential for the successful applicant. Knowledge of lipid metabolism, neurobiology or analytical chemistry is preferred but not required.
The PhD candidate is expected to hold a Master’s degree in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or equivalent degrees in medicine or pharmacy.

Our small and dynamic group offers excellent training on the state of the art LC/MS instruments and close mentoring and guidance through the PhD project evolution. Our labs are located in the newly built center of brain, behavior and metabolism (CBBM) https://www.cbbm.uni-luebeck.de/nc/cbbm.html which offers access to a state of the art research facilities and ensure interaction with dozen of research groups and hundreds of established scientists in one building.
