Position Description


A unique, exciting opportunity exists for an exceptionally talented candidate interested in undertaking a PhD at the Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC).

John Lane Memorial Scholarship:

Dr John Lane, recognised as the father of aviation safety in Australia, and a leader in road safety, passed away on January 21st 1999 at the age of 81. In recognition of Dr Lane’s contribution to the field of injury prevention, and as a personal tribute, the Trustees of the MUARC Foundation established the John Lane Memorial Scholarship.

With the scholarship now vacant, potential PhD candidates have the opportunity to apply for this scholarship and undertake their PhD research program at MUARC in one of the following broad injury prevention areas:

Disaster resilience, preparedness and management;
Falls prevention;
Injury epidemiology;
Injury outcomes;
Injury prevention in lower and middle-income countries;
Road/Transport safety, and
Workplace safety.

A Monash University Accident Research Centre Foundation Scholarship offers a generous AUD$35,000 p.a. tax-free stipend – annually indexed plus allowances as per the stipend conditions.

Candidate Requirements:

As the successful candidate, you will:

Have a relevant Honours or Masters degree with H1 or equivalent
Meet the eligibility criteria for PhD candidature at Monash University
Have Australian or New Zealand citizenship (or permanent residence), and currently residing in Australia
Have a strong interest in safety and injury prevention research
Have excellent written and verbal communication skills
Have the ability to work independently, as well as part of a team
Have the ability to plan, organise, manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
Have analytical thinking, data analysis and critical problem-solving skills
