Position Description

DTU Physics at the Technical University of Denmark is offering a three-year PhD position for work in the phase field modeling. The position is open to be filled as soon as possible.

Using synchrotrons our group has developed x-ray techniques for mapping grain and domain structures non-destructively. With these we can acquire 3D movies of the evolution of the structure of the material during annealing. We this PhD we aim at connecting such experiments with 3D phase field simulations of the growth. The initial structure from the experiment will be used as input to the simulations. We can then compare an experimental movie and a simulated 3D movie voxel by voxel and time-step by time-step. This is seen as a powerful approach to improve the modeling of grain growth.

The PhD is in collaboration with the group of Prof. Voorhees at Northwestern University in Chicago; they are experts in phase field modeling. It will also be one of 11 stipends in CINEMA, a research alliance with the Danish energy sector. As such some of the applications will be of direct interest to industry.

We offer
An international cross-disciplinary environment and a challenging job description. Being first-movers there is an opportunity to develop a new research direction.

Job description
Your main task will be to develop an efficient code, perform the phase field simulations and relate the results to materials science. The degree of involvement in complementary x-ray experiments will depend on background and interest. You will be based in Chicago for extended periods.

Qualifications
• A master’s degree in physics, materials science or engineering.
• Demonstrated programming skills.
• Ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks, and to be a part of a large, dynamical group.
• Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
Experience with materials simulations is an advantage.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide. (http://www.dtu.dk/english/Education/phd/PhDguide)

Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made Professor Henning Friis Poulsen.

Salary and terms of appointment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The candidate is expected to start October 15 or as soon as possible thereafter.
