Position Description


The Coma Science Group, headed by Pr Steven Laureys, invites applications for a doctoral position (funded for 4 years, with a 1 year trial period). The candidate will be based at the Coma Science Group – GIGA Research Centre and Neurology Dept, University of Liège. Position starts January, 2016.
The specific focus of the project will concern the investigation of altered states of consciousness, and more specifically cognitive and neural correlates studies of memory processes in patients recovering from coma.
The latter will be done using a multimodal approach which combines structural and functional neuroimaging studies. Furthermore, the candidate will be asked to work on different behavioral and neuroimaging tools to improve our understanding on consciousness and related disorders (coma, vegetative state, minimally conscious state, locked-in syndrome).
Required diploma:
Successfully or nearly finished MSc or equivalent degree graduates in Psychology, Neuroscience,
Biomedical Science, or a closely related field, with excellent grades and a strong interest in conducting research from an interdisciplinary perspective are encouraged to apply.
Expected qualifications:
 Highly motivated candidate with strong interest in the understanding of human consciousness and improving diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of patients with disorders of consciousness
 Candidate must fluently speak French (level required: C1/C2) and English. A good knowledge of Flemish/Dutch is an advantage
 Experience in clinics is an advantage
 Demonstrated experience with experimental research is required
 The candidate should be able to work independently at a multidisciplinary level, while engaging in close internal collaborations
 Team-working abilities and interpersonal skills
 Candidate must have knowledge in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) procedure
 A knowledge of Electroencephalography (EEG) acquisition and analyses is an advantage
