Position Description


One of the central themes in Nanoscience is Molecular Electronics which aims to reach the next level of miniaturization of electronic components. This project focuses on the requirements needed to translate single-molecule electronics from a fundamental tool to a practical technology. Using scanning probe microscopy approaches (mainly scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic force microscopy) combined with surface chemistry and electrochemical techniques this project aim to enhance the physical and chemical properties of the contact between single molecules and electrodes. A key approach is the use of new electrode-molecule anchoring strategies including the integration of single-molecule junctions with the industrially dominant silicon electronics and the utilizations of chemistries whose electronic properties lead to a device-performance beyond conventional electronics.

Excellent Masters students with experience in nanotechnology (STM / AFM), electrochemistry or surface chemistry are invited to apply. The successful applicant will perform surface chemistry reactions (electrochemically and/or self-assembly) and characterization. Key experiments include wiring single molecule using the scanning tunnelling microscopy approaches. Knowledge in Labview graphical programming is highly desirable.

Living allowance scholarships are available. The base stipend for each student will be at the rate of ca. AUD$ 25849 per annum tax-free for three years with the possibility of a six-month extension. Exemption from tuition fees will be considered for International students. Successful students are expected to commence early 2017.
