The Ecole de Technologie Superieure (ETS) is a dynamic and rapidly growing engineering school located in the vibrant and cosmopolitan downtown of Montreal, Canada (http://en.etsmtl.ca). PROJECT DESCRIPTION :
Prof. Bora Ung is establishing a lab specialized in the domains of specialty fiber optics and photonic components for optical communications (chiefly in the exciting new field of spatial division multiplexing) and as optical fiber sensors. He invites applications for a fully-funded PhD studentship in photonics and optoelectronics. The PhD student will have unique opportunities to design specialty optical fibers (microstructured fiber, photonic crystal fiber, or exotic composition/shaped fiber) and bring to life the optoelectronics systems tailored for telecommunication and remote sensing applications, as well as to develop and implement novel state-of-the-art techniques for the characterization of multimode and multicore fibers. Specifically, the project will involve the design of novel interconnections between multicore fibers and photonic networks and the experimental implementation of such designs and its characterization. Furthermore, the project may also involve the investigation of key all-fiber photonic components (e.g. mode convertors, optical amplifiers). This research is projected to generate publications in high quality scientific journals. The student will have the chance to work in collaboration with multiple academic and industrial partners, and to present research results at international conferences and meetings.

Financial support and stipends will be in line with Canadian standards for doctoral students in applied science and engineering. Moreover, attractive opportunities for graduate scholarships and fellowships are available for meritorious PhD candidates (both foreign or Canadian citizens).

APPLICATION PROCEDURE We are seeking a highly self-motivated and ambitious candidate with a Master degree in a relevant discipline (electrical engineering, physical engineering, physics or equivalent). This student must share our passion for research and a desire to make an impact in the optics and photonics community. An acceptable proficiency in English or French (oral and writing) is required. The position is expected to start as soon as possible.
