A fully funded Ph.D. position is available in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at the University of Alabama in Huntsville starting Spring Semester 2019. The focus of the project is on the performance enhancement of aerodynamic systems using fluidic and smart material actuators such as piezoelectric-based synthetic jets and micro fiber composites. Our research integrates wind tunnel testing and advanced experimental fluid dynamic techniques such as particle image velocimetry (PIV) to investigate the flow structures and apply more effectively flow control techniques for aerospace and wind energy applications.
Candidates with an M.S. degree (exceptional individuals with a B.S. degree might be considered) in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or related field(s) will be considered. Prior experience in at least one of the following is required: PIV testing, machine-shop experience, Controls, UAV flight testing, aircraft design. Prior publishing in journal or conference proceeding is desirable. Additional experience in embedded systems or/and wing fabrication is a plus.
