The Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute – (HKI, investigates the pathobiology of human-pathogenic fungi and identifies targets for the development of novel natural product-based antibiotics. The Department of Molecular and Applied Microbiology invites talented and highly gifted candidates to apply for a
PhD position
starting from October 2021 for three years initially.

The successful candidate will work within the framework of a DFG-funded Collaborative Research Center / Transregio 124 “FungiNet” ( on the surface proteins of the human-pathogenic fungi Lichtheimia corymbifera and Aspergillus fumigatus as virulence determinant

Main topics of the project may include:
• Elucidation of the mechanisms allowing for long-term survival of spores in the phagosome of macrophages
• Genetic, proteomic and microscopic characterization of phagosomes containing spores of L. corymbifera and A. fumigatus
• Characterization of spore and host proteins involved in delayed phagosome maturation
• Screening and testing of compounds that interfere with the phagosome maturation process

Our requirements: PhD in natural sciences/life sciences (Microbiology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology). Good knowledge in standard techniques of microbiology, immunology, biochemistry and molecular biology is expected. Experience in cell culture, fluorescence microscopy and CRISPR/Cas-methods would be preferable. We would welcome a highly motivated co-worker with excellent communications skills and the ability to work on a cooperative project.
