Recent progress in optical fibers and photonic crystal fibers continue to provide new scientific insights and real-life applications in many fields. The proposed project is for one doctoral PhD student in engineering who will investigate new specialty fibers and methods for the remote monitoring of biomedical and environmental conditions towards commercial applications with the collaboration of four Canadian industrial partners, including Aligo Innovation. The research will be performed within the department of electrical engineering at the Ecole de Technologie Supérieure (ETS, http://en.etsmtl.ca), a fast growing engineering-only university located in the dynamic city of Montreal, Canada (http://ville.montreal.qc.ca/375/en/).
Our research group focuses on the design of specialty optical fibers and microstructured fibers, and their use as a platform for devising novel photonic devices. Our research activities are supported by provincial (FRQNT) and federal (NSERC) granting bodies, as well as private industrial partners.
The ideal candidate will have a Masters degree with laboratory experience in optics and photonics, manipulation of lasers, as well as publishing experience in scientific journals. The candidate is also expected to work alongside group members in the PHotonics Innovations Lab (phi_lab). A competitive bursary is offered for the duration of doctoral studies. The expected start of the position is in September 2018.
