Position Description

We are looking for highly motivated candidates for several PhD projects at the newly established Laboratory for Bioanalytical Chemistry at the University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland. The projects are part of our ongoing research into chemical communication and secondary metabolism of nematodes and involve 1) the development of MS-based screens for nematode pheromone analysis, 2) the comparative analysis of nematode pheromones, 3) the isolation, structure elucidation and total synthesis of nematode derived small molecule signals, and 4) their functional characterization in intra- and interspecies as well as cross-kingdom interactions.

We offer fascinating research opportunities at the interface of analytical chemistry, chemical ecology, chemical synthesis, and nematology; an international team; and the opportunity to undertake high-level research in an idyllic setting between the mountains and the lake.

Prospective candidates must hold a Master’s degree in chemistry or a related field. We are particularly interested in students that already have solid experience in either analytical chemistry (including natural products isolation and structure elucidation using MS and NMR techniques) and/or organic chemical synthesis. Knowledge in comparative metabolomics and/or sterile culture techniques is an asset. In addition to research, the candidates will assist in teaching Bachelor students, which involves the preparation and supervision of laboratory courses in chemistry. Consequently, French language proficiency is required as well as good knowledge of English (or German). Please contact Stephan von Reuss (svonreuss@ice.mpg.de) for more information regarding the projects.
