Position Description

PhD Student Position in Asymmetric Flow Field Separation

The research group “Fluid Dynamics of Complex Biosystems” headed by Prof. Dr. Natalie Germann has an open position in the field of experimental fluid dynamics.
Area of research

The research of Professor Germann’s fluid dynamics group focuses on the rheology of viscoelastic fluids that are of industrial relevance (e.g. wormlike micelles, polymer and biopolymer solutions). The reason for the unusual rheological properties of viscoelastic fluids is their microstructural dynamics. To establish a more fundamental understanding of viscoelastic fluids, her research group investigates the relationship between their rheology and their microstructure. The research approach combines thermodynamic modeling and numerical simulation with laboratory experiments. More information about Professor Germann’s fluid dynamics group can be found at http://germann.wzw.tum.de/.

Your project

You will be working on the ZIM project “Development of an asymmetric flow field separation using a membrane hydrogel system for additional protein separation using the principle of gel electrophoresis.” (ZF4025013SB6). This project is in collaboration with a SMW company and focuses on the efficiency improvement of an asymmetric-flow biomolecule separation unit (AF4). The separation is implemented by a membrane wall in the device. However, the combination of the flow conditions and the performance of the membrane is crucial for the final selective separation. Typically thin hydrogel layers are expected to develop on the membrane side. The aim of this project is to assess the development of these layers and understand the mechanisms of the hydrogel adhesion to the membrane surface. Protein model systems will be used to evaluate different cleaning strategies.

Your profile

We are looking for a talented individual who is excited about academic research. He/she should be able to work independently as well as to cooperate with an interdisciplinary team of researchers. Applicants should hold a Master degree or equivalent ECT in engineering fields (preferably chemical engineering). He/she should have a solid background in fluid mechanics and rheology. Previous experimental experience in membranes and CFD skills will be highly appreciated. Laboratory work and practical applications will be an essential part of the project. Good communication skills and fluency in both written and spoken English are required. Professional German language skills are expected since the candidate can actively participate in the teaching activities of the FDCB group and write the yearly project reports.
Our offer

The Technische Universität von München (TUM) is one of the most renowned universities in Europe. We are offering excellent working conditions in a highly international research environment. The salary is in accordance to the Public Sector Collective Agreement on Länder (TV-L E13). The position can be filled immediately and is initially limited to two years, the second year being contingent on satisfactory progress. Continuation of the appointment beyond this period of time is intended.

How to Apply

Please send your application by electronic mail and preferably in one single pdf-document to natalie.germann@tum.de (Prof. Dr. Natalie Germann). For full consideration, the application should include a cover letter, a detailed CV, a list of publications, copies of all educational certificates and transcripts of records, a summary of past research activities, evidence of teaching interest and abilities, and three letters of recommendation. The deadline for application is April10, 2017. Early applications are encouraged; applications may be processed as soon as they are received. TUM is an equal opportunity employer. Qualified women are therefore particularly encouraged to apply. Applicants with disabilities are treated with preference given comparable qualification.
