Position Description

ACCENT PRO 2000 S.R.L. (AP2K), a private Research & Development company in the field of 2D&3D X-ray Imaging for industrial applications, located in Bucharest, Romania (www.accent.ro) seeks a dedicated candidate for a 3-years PhD position in the interdisciplinary field of X-ray physics, materials science and computation.

As PhD student, you will be part of our Research and Development team in the field of 2D &3D X-ray multimodal X-ray imaging for investigation of threats detection for security applications, especially in advanced baggage scanner techniques. Our goal is to analyze and optimize, by simulations and experiments, the materials identification methods based on various X-ray imaging techniques, such as: dual-energy, multi-energy and diffractions, using different scanning techniques that includes one-view, dual-view, multi-view and 2D and 3D static (non-gantry) tomography.

You will work closely with research colleagues inside AP2K but also with the academic partner at Department of Physics at the Technical University of Denmark – DTU (www.dtu.dk) and externally, with our industrial and academic partners.

Your PhD project will be part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network, “Multiscale, Multimodal, Multidimensional imaging for EngineeRING” or in short MUMMERING (www.mummering.eu). The network is concerned with interdisciplinary R&D and training in 3D imaging and its application in materials and information science. The network offers totally 15 PhD positions Information about all 15 PhD positions can be found here.

Scientifically, the network addresses the challenges 3D imaging must overcome for being a workable tool in materials science and engineering. This means filling the gap between the capacities by which experimental data can be captured and by which the data can be processed.

Your PhD project will be on developing a new methodology for 3D reconstruction of spectrally resolved X-ray data with the aim of threat identification using various 3D scanning techniques. You will begin by using/designing a simulation program for getting the necessary simulated data for algorithms development. Later, you will test and improve the algorithms by using experimental data acquired with the state-of-the-art energy dispersive x-ray detectors mounted in laboratory scanners prototypes. You will analyse also the existing commercial instruments and set-ups and the custom-made scanners for developing new or improved scanning modalities.

The application of X-rays in the field of Security are generally moving to representing the scanned object in 3D and there is a need for algorithms that reconstruct and classify the objects specifically for the recognition of restricted materials rather than catering to the needs in medical CT from which the current methods have evolved. You will work on a fixed gantry solution that incorporate the widest possible range of information for the material recognition that takes advantage of both absorption and diffraction information across the spectral dimension. Besides achieving an improved material classification method that will increase the security level of Europe’s critical infrastructure, you will develop also methods toward application in a high-volume scanning environment, such as airport baggage scanners.

As a candidate, you will need skills in computational mathematics and a good understanding of fundamental X-ray physics and the interaction of X-rays with materials. You should also be able to work creatively to develop key new technologies and identify and bring together auxiliary capabilities both within and outside the project.

How to Apply
