PhD position in wireless communications (security in Phy Layer)

Position Description

The recent widespread of wireless communication systems can present a major risk to the privacy of people if the current radio access technologies does not provide enough data security. Typically, the security solutions rely on bit-level cryptographic techniques and the associated protocols at the various layers of the network model. However, security standards require more improvement especially for the public wireless networks because of broadcast nature of the wireless medium and the widely recognized security leaks. Moreover, enhanced ciphering and authentication protocols should avoid high energy and computations cost to be suitable for users with constrained mobile devices.
Recently, many researchers have made contributions to find alternative security solutions to fit the requirements of the current and emerging wireless networks. Physical- layer security provides novel methods of secrecy through the employment of the intrinsic randomness existing in any communication medium, such as noise, scrambled data, and interferences. Physical-layer security contains various techniques that can be applied to the wireless environment and can be categorized in two classes, keyless systems and physically induced keyed systems. The keyless systems do not use a key while the keyed systems require a key which is produced by the physical layer and not by the end-user. This research will consider both cases.

The recruited PhD student will be committed to investigate:

Explores issues and solutions in providing physical layer security in practical wireless systems
Analyses the capacity-achieving methods and coding schemes for secure communication, as well as secret key generation and agreement over wireless channels
Designs key concepts and analytical models of physical layer security in both single-user and multi-user communication systems
Applies new signal processing techniques to design physical layer security enhancements

This appointment is for 4 years. The majority of working time will be devoted to the research, according to the job description. The work will also include taking part in the supervision of MSc students.

The annual scholarship is 18 to 20 KCAD$; a variance according to personal performance may also be added.
Required Qualifications:
The candidate should have a MSc in wireless communications, along with strong knowledge of information and communication theory, signal processing, estimation and detection theory, and digital communication systems.
