Position Description

We invite applications for a 4-years PhD position at Utrecht University, The Netherlands. The
project is set within the context of the alarming rise of multidrug-resistant pathogens. In detail, the PhD project deals with i) high-resolution studies of the mode of action of powerful & novel membrane-active antibiotics in their native cellular environment and ii) the rational design of improved antibiotics.
The project is embedded in a highly collaborative setting at the interface between structural
biology, chemical biological, and medical chemistry. The project follows up on highly successful
research lines that we could establish over the last couple of years.

We offer access to state-of-the-art NMR machines (950, 900, 800, 700 MHz). Moreover, a 1200
MHz machine will be installed soon. The 800 and 400 MHz magnets are equipped for DNP. The
candidate will have access to a well-equipped molecular biology lab, as well as well-equipped
facilities for the design of antibiotics. Furthermore, we are located in the Bijvoet Center, where
access to other high-end structural biology equipment is readily available.

Utrecht is a charming student city in the heart of the Netherlands.

Applicants should have a degree in biochemistry/biophysics or a related discipline. Experience in
molecular biology is highly desirable. Experience in NMR (solution or solids) is a plus, but not
required. The starting date is beginning of 2019.

To apply, please send a (brief) cover letter, your CV, and the contact details of two references to:
