Position Description


The chair of “Industrial Economics of the African Emergence” is recruiting 3 Ph.D. students of African nationalities. The chair is jointly hosted by both the Cerna (Center of Industrial Economics) at Mines ParisTech and the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Benguerir located 70 km from the city of Marrakech. The doctoral degree awarded by the Chair is the Ph.D. degree in Economics from PSL, Paris Sciences et Lettres, of which Mines ParisTech is a part. Ph.D. students and post-doctoral professors share their working time between Benguerir and Paris.

Funding and conditions:
The Chair is funded by the Office Chérifien des Phosphates, OCP SA A Chair Convention binds OCP SA, UM6P, the Mines ParisTech Foundation, and Mines ParisTech.
Full-timePh.D.D students and post-doctoral researchers will receive a research grant of 10 000 MAD ( 920 euros when in Morocco and 1200 euros when in Paris, in addition, they are offered an individual room at “La Maison des Mines at Paris).

About the Chair:

On October 1, 2018, the Chair “Economics, Finance and Management of commodities” active from 2013 to 2018 within Mines ParisTech, was partially transferred to the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, UM6P, in Morocco, giving birth to a new chair teaching and research, whose field of research is broadening and entitled. 

Research Area: The unifying theme of the Chair’s research is job creation in Africa. The Chair favors theses on articles (3 articles), of applied quantitative economics, oriented towards the design and evaluation of economic policies.

Current research:
Models of price evolution of mineral commodities.

The effect of mining rents on development in Africa

Financialization of the fertilizer markets

The role of the mobile phone on the well-being of peasants in Africa;

The process of industrialization in Morocco in particular by foreign direct investment

The shock on Africa of China’s entry into the WTO via direct investment and international trade

Structural change in Africa: agricultural productivity, rural exodus, urbanization, informal sector

Mapping and evolution of income inequality in Morocco and Africa

Knowledge economics
